Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act

 

The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act amends the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA) to grant the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) the authority to regulate the sale, marketing and manufacturing of tobacco products.

June 12, 2009 [Washington, DC] -- The House overwhelmingly endorsed the Senate version of the FDA tobacco regulation bill with a 307-97 vote - an emphatic exclamation point for the successful conclusion of a decade long battle. June 11, 2009 [Washington, DC] -- Legislation giving the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) the authority to regulate tobacco products passed the Senate this afternoon on a resounding vote of 79 to 17 - an unexpectedly large vote of support for an idea that was deemed politically impossible just a few years ago.  To read LCA's entire statement, click here.

June 9, 2009 [Washington, DC] -- After nearly a decade of unsuccessful attempts, historic legislation that will give the Food and Drug Administration the authority to regulate nicotine, the drug in tobacco that makes smoking so addictive, is on the Senate floor and could be passed tonight. The House of Representatives passed a similar bill last month.

May 14, 2009 [Washington, DC] -- Lung Cancer Alliance has sent a letter to Senator Edward Kennedy (D-MA) commending his support of The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act of 2009 (S. 982) in the Senate Health Education Labor and Pensions Committee (HELP).  To read this letter, click here.

May 2009 [Ireland] -- A recent study by Dr. David Burns, a world renowned specialist on tobacco cessation and member of the Lung Cancer Alliance Medical and Scientific Advisory Board, draws a direct correlation between changes in cigarette design and increased rates of Adenocarcinoma in smokers and former smokers.  Regulation of tobacco products, including cigarettes, would allow the FDA to supervise and limit such potential design changes in the future.  To view the scientific abstract, click here.

March 3, 2009 [Washington, DC] -- Congressman Henry Waxman (D-CA) reintroduced the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act (HR. 1256) to the 111th Congress.  HR. 1256 is bipartisan legislation that would grant the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authority to regulate tobacco products.  To read the entire statement, click here.
